Plutarchus, L. Mestrius (c. A.D. 50-120)

De Defectu Oraculorum 18 (419e-420a)

" Demetrius said that there were many desert islands scattered aroud Brettania, (Brettania), some of which were named from spirits (daimonon) and heroes. He said that he himelf, having been sent by the Emperor to enquire into and inspect them, had sailed to the island nearest to the desert ones; it did not have many inhabitants, but they were all held sacred and inviolated by the Brettanoi (Brettanoi). Soon after he arrived, there occured a great turbulence in the air and many portents, with rushing winds and raging thunderstorms. When these ceased, the islanders said that the passing of one of the great ones had taken place : for just as a lamp when it is lit shines without evil effect, but when it is extinguished is troublesome to many, so great souls (Psikai*) are benign and mild, but their extinction and destruction often, as now, produce great winds and storms anf often infect the air with pestilent effects. And there was one island there in wich Cronos** was held asleep under guard of Briareus***; for that sleep had been contrived as his bonds and around him were many spirits (daimones), his attendants and servants."
